Gareth Bale Akan Pindah Real Madrid?

Sergio Van Dijk Ke Persib Bandung?

Know Your Foe - South Carolina

The Wolverines close their 133rd season on New Year’s Day when they take on South Carolina in the Hall Of Fame corporate-steakhouse-chain bowl. This will be only the third meeting between the schools - each team has beaten the other on their opponent’s turf so it’s only appropriate that this rubber match is on neutral grounds. Michigan hasn’t played the Gamecocks since 1985 which was before the MZone, before many MZone readers were fans, hell, before many MZone readers were born. So you may be wondering, who are these South Carolinians and what should we know about them? To answer these and many other questions, the MZone is proud to present this year's special bowl edition of KNOW YOUR FOE.

History – The University of South Carolina (also known as USC or SC - no not that USC or SC – or Carolina – no, not that Carolina), was founded in late 1801 as South Carolina College to “promote harmony between the Lowcountry and the Backcountry.” For those not familiar, the lowcountry is the southeastern part of the state, along the Atlantic while the backcountry is the northwest portion, now known as Upstate. The first classes were held in 1805 with an enrollment of nine students.

But like every other school in the South, USC’s history was abruptly altered by the Civil War. Enrollment had grown to 72 in 1862, but all of those students volunteered for the Confederate army in March. The college temporarily closed and then opened to those under 18 which brought the enrollment to, again, nine. At that point the college was closed down and converted into a hospital. The campus was likely spared destruction because of its status as a hospital, preserving the historic Horseshoe which serves as the center of campus.

The college re-opened in 1866 and was converted to the University of South Carolina in 1865. Unlike so many schools in the South, USC had a measure of racial equity as racial discrimination was prevented in admissions, and two black trustees were part of the governing board in 1869. The first black student was admitted in 1873, decades ahead of most other Southern schools.

Location – Columbia, South Carolina. Columbia is the state capital and with a population around 130,000, the largest city in South Carolina. Located smack dab in the middle of the Palmetto State, Columbia enjoys a diversified economy highlighted by the state government, healthcare, and the university. It also hosts a diversified list of famous natives, from actors Aziz Ansari and Kristin Davis to musical acts Hootie and the Blowfish, and Toro Y Moi, to NBAers Tyrone Corbin and Alex English.
Amazingly, this isn’t the only Columbia to host a major university, and it’s not even unique in the conference. The most amazing feature of Columbia, however, is how freaking hot and humid it gets in the summer. KYF found ourselves in Columbia a few Junes ago when the mercury topped out near 110 and the humidity was almost as high. Wearing the dark colors of the university is a death wish under those conditions.

Nickname – Gamecocks. One of the most unique nicknames, not just in college athletics but all of sports, its origins for USC are somewhat obscure. Some sources claim it was borne as an honor to Thomas Sumter, a South Carolina native and Revolutionary War hero. A British general commented that Sumter “fought like a gamecock.” Whether that’s the case, the university’s teams had several nicknames until 100 years ago. In 1902, USC upset rival Clemson and students and fans paraded through the streets of Columbia holding a transparency drawn by a math professor by the name of – we kid you not – Horton Colcock. Two weeks later, newspaper reports began referring to the team as the “Game Cocks”. The two words were joined a couple of years later and the nickname has stuck since. KYF longs for the day when a man named Horton Colcock would be considered a hero and a man of letters, rather than the subject of relentless and horrendous ridicule.

A gamecock, of course, is a type of rooster that was often used for cockfighting in which the roosters fought to the death. Though cockfighting is legal throughout many regions of the world, it’s been illegal in the United States since Louisiana became the last state to outlaw it in 2008. Cockfighting was a central plot point of The Little Jerry episode of Seinfeld as well as the Chicken George character in Roots. The South Carolina Gamecocks have entered pop culture most predominantly on baseball caps worn by many a frat boy with the shortened ‘Cocks adorning the front.

Mascot – Cocky. The costumed version of a cartoon gamecock made his official debut for the university in 1980. For the previous two years USC had a costumed mascot named Big Spur, but it was considered too big and unwieldy so Cocky was created as Big Spur’s son. Cocky was met with immediate derision and not considered dignified enough for the university. Look at him – I guess the measure of dignified has changed over time. Cocky started small after the ridicule, becoming the mascot for the women’s teams and the baseball team and slowly took over for Big Spur. Hear that Dave Brandon? Just introduce some abomination of a mascot and plow through. Eventually everyone will accept and even love it, no matter how undignified.

He’s won a mascot “National Championship” four times and has had two of his portrayers move on to professional sports – one as Billy the (Florida) Marlin and one as Sir Purr, the Carolina Panthers' mascot. So South Carolina could be considered “Mascot U.” Cocky has become such a strong representative of the university that one of the most active on-line message boards is Cockytalk.com. Just be careful that you type that into your browser correctly.

Colors – Garnet and Black. KYF has gone over the whole red/scarlet/cardinal/crimson thing many times before. But South Carolina doesn’t really fall into that group of red teams. Garnet is clearly a much darker shade of red and is more maroon than red. Only one other team uses garnet as an official color (Florida State) and so South Carolina’s colors, though a little dark together, are quite unique. And when combined with the bright white of the helmets, this is an excellent combination. The combo of Garnet and Black is used by the school and its fans as a rallying cry, much the same way Maize and Blue is used for Michigan.

The school’s teams have always used the color combination as they date back to 1895 when a banner was presented to the football team that contained the colors.

Logo/Helmet – The South Carolina helmet has seen many changes over the years, but it’s had a gamecock on the side since 1969 and that’s been paired with a block C since 1975. The colors have changed since then, including an unfortunate use of camouflage in 2011, but the current crisp, white helmet with the unique logo is the best in the school’s history, and among the best in college football.

Those helmets are so great because they use the great Carolina logo. The unique nickname leads to the use of the ornithological-correct gamecock. There’s no goofy cartoon here, and not some generic logo that could have been designed by some 15 year old on his MacBook Pro. Add in the use of the collegiate block C and it’s a classic logo that should never be altered. Besides, the logo was a centerpiece of an MZone classic from the deep past.

Fight songTheFighting Gamecocks Lead The Way. This is one of the fastest tempos for a fight song that KYF has heard and it sounds like a fight song that would be written for a Broadway musical. And for good reason – the original tune, Step to the Rear, was written for the musical How Now, Dow Jones. The song was adapted as the new SC fight song in the late 1960s by former football coach and athletic director Paul Dietzel. He wrote the lyrics to the new song, no doubt cashing in on royalties every time the song is played. The lyrics are generic at best and lame at worst.

Hey, Let's give a cheer, Carolina is here,
The Fighting Gamecocks lead the way.

Who gives a care, If the going gets tough,
And when it is rough, that's when the 'Cocks get going.

Hail to our colors of garnet and Black,
In Carolina pride have we.

So, Go Gamecocks Go - FIGHT!
Drive for the goal - FIGHT!
USC will win today - GO COCKS!
So, let's give a cheer, Carolina is here.
The Fighting Gamecocks All The Way!

It’s unclear why the original fight song, Carolina Let Your Voices Ring was changed by Dietzel. The song, though unspectacular, is clearly better than The Fighting Gamecocks Lead The Way. The natural inclination for an ol’ Yankee like KYF was to assume there were some politically incorrect lyrics in Carolina Let Your Voices Ring, but that’s not the case, and the song is still played as part of the band’s football pre-game show.

Carolina, Let your voices ring, to you we sing our praises high
Ring out! Sing out! On to victory! Forever fight we'll do or die
Carolina, Fight with all your might, let all unite in proud acclaim
Then battle on together, one and all forever
Fight, we've got to win the game, Rah! Rah! Rah!
Garnet & Black we raise, Gamecocks forever praise
So fight for Carolina, Cheer for Carolina, Hail to our U.S.C.
We cheer forever U.S.C.!

So here’s a song with a better tune and better lyrics and you change it for something from Broadway with lyrics written by your football coach? It doesn’t make sense. Besides, how successful can you expect your teams to be when your fight song is a Broadway tune? KYF has to wonder if some marketing guys thought it would create great synergy. We wouldn’t be surprised if Dave Brandon is in touch with Andrew Lloyd Weber right now about changing The Victors.

Academics – According to the most recent U. S. News rankingof America's Best Colleges, South Carolina languishes at 115th, which ties them with four schools, including Oregon. This ranking would put them at the bottom of the Big Ten well behind current cellar-dweller Nebraska (#101), and marks South Carolina as – by far – the worst academic institution to play Michigan this season. But the Gamecocks don’t care about that - they’re ranked 9th in the 14-team Southeast Conference, and well behind in-state rival Clemson (#68).

Athletics – South Carolina has been a bit of a nomad regarding conference affiliation. The football and basketball teams were part of the Southern Conference from 1922 until 1953 when the Gamecocks became a founding member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. But too many recruiting disputes led USC to leave the conference and play as an independent starting in 1971. Football remained independent while the rest of the teams joined the Metro Conference in 1983. Finally, in 1991 Carolina joined the Southeast Conference when it expanded to 12 schools.

No matter which conference they’re competing in, South Carolina has had surprisingly little success. The school offers 19 varsity sports (Michigan has 27), but the Gamecocks can only claim three national championships in any sport. The 2002 women’s track and field team was the first Gamecock championship team, followed by back to back national titles for the baseball team in 2010 and 2011. And, no, KYF doesn’t count national titles in women’s equestrian. Even conference titles are scarce. The football team has never won the SEC and has won just one conference title in its history (1969, ACC) though its years as an independent may have limited this number. The men’s basketball team has one SEC championship (1997) and has only made eight NCAA tournaments. The two NIT titles are no longer impressive to Michigan fans. Baseball is, by far, the most successful team at South Carolina, having won those national titles, along with three SEC titles in the past 12 years, to go along with 11 College World Series appearances which include four runner-up finishes.

The football team was under .500 for their history until a couple of years ago, and has only won as many as nine games five times (including the past three seasons). The Gamecocks play in 80,250 seat Williams-Brice stadium, which resembles one of those baseball cookie-cutter stadiums built in the early ‘70s, but displays one of the loudest crowds on Saturdays.

Despite all of the baseball success, there haven’t been that many major leaguers who wore the Garnet and Black. The most well-known is former Met Mookie Wilson. The basketball team has sent only 22 players to the NBA, with former Nugget Alex English being the most successful. The football team has had 11 first round picks, including the #1 overall, Heisman winner George Rogers in 1981. Sterling Sharpe is probably the most successful Gamecock in the NFL, along with current Falcon defensive end John Abraham.

Famous alums – For a school with such a long history, South Carolina’s list of famous alumni is disappointing. They did corner the market on blond newsreaders in the ‘90s, with Rita Cosby, Leeza Gibbons, and Van Earl Wright all being Gamecocks. All four members of the band Hootie and the Blowfish attended the university which might have been cool in 1994 but not so much today. Not only was that Hootie not the only Hootie to have attended SC, but he’s not even the only famous Hootie. William “Hootie” Johnson, the former chairman of the Augusta National Golf Club is an SC alum, as is Robert McNair, owner of the NFL’s Houston Texans.

The list also includes plenty of local politicians, including plenty of congressmen, senators, and governors, but, alas, no U.S.Presidents.

The Game – The end to this uneventful season takes place in a generic bowl against a solid, but bland team. No wonder there seems to be a lack of enthusiasm for this bowl game compared to last year. This year’s Michigan team is still hard to read, even after 12 games. They have little difficulty with teams that aren’t as good as they are. But they haven’t beaten a good team all year, and have shown a propensity to cough up the football – and the game – against those better teams. The poor coaching performance against Ohio still resonates, and is a concern going up against a much better squad.

An intrepid Blog reader sent us this quote from the Rivals write-up on the game. Special thanks to him!

"Huber played with a nonstop motor throughout the day. If he didn't make the tackle, he was around the ball or involved in the play. Huber was the most physical player on the North team, consistently taking on offensive linemen and blowing up running plays. He excelled at reading and making the stop on inside running plays."

Manchester United Kandidat Juara Liga Inggris 2012/13

4-2-5 vs the Flexbone - Secondary Play

This is my first post on the 4-2-5.  I'm no expert on the defense, but I am smart enough to know that I better have a plan to defend the Option.  I will not do an entire series breaking down each position like my guest writers and I did with the 4-3.  The front 4 are still obeying BDSD (Block-Down-Step-Down) rules like with the 4-3 and the two Inside LBs will be very similar to the 4-3 Mike LB in terms of Open and Closed Window reads.  I will instead focus solely on the Secondary Play, specifically how the Safeties adjust vs. the motion of the Flexbone offense.  Duece also has a great post here on the 4-2-5 vs the Flexbone both from a 2 Hi look and a 1 Hi look that you need to read.

The motion of the Flexbone Offense makes it difficult to defend, however, the 4-2-5 has three Safeties that will adjust vs. the motion of the two Slot Backs.  Before I go any further, it is important to make sure you are allotting sufficient Group Time in practice for your Safeties vs. all of the possible motions, especially Counter motion.  And of course, you cannot expect your players to be able to defend the Flexbone the week of the game, but Spring practice is where this teaching process of defending the Option needs to begin, and these skills need to be refreshed periodically throughout the season.

The $ and WS will key and mirror the Slot Back to their side, and there are 5 different looks that they will see.

1.  No Motion
2.  Motion Away
3.  Motion to You - Slot Arcs
4.  Motion to You - Slot Releases Vertical
5.  Motion to You - Slot Folds

1.  No Motion

The base call is Cover Brown, which is a Man-Free coverage with the FS as the Deep Middle player—pretty basic stuff.  Whether they line up in Double Slot, Slot Trips, or whatever, the $ and WS will cover their Slot man-to-man and the two CBs are man vs. the two WRs.  This can be vs. a Drop-Back Pass or a Sprint-Out Pass.

2.  Motion Away

If the $ / WS sees his Slot motion away, he will run to the MOF (Middle of the Field).  He will help erase any mistakes by the FS and provide help defending the Post route to the opposite side of the field as you will see in the cut-ups. He will key the opposite Slot as he is runs back to the MOF for any type of Counter coming back to his side.  Note: you can also have the $ / WS stay home on the backside of the motion instead of running to the MOF and the frontside reads would still stay the same.

3.  Motion to You - Slot Arcs

Slot Arcs - Run
Vs. Slot motion to you, if the Slot Arc blocks, the $ / WS will want to push the Slot back vertical as he is running sideways.  The $ / WS is the Force / Pitch player.  This will often be vs. Rocket, which can get to the perimeter quickly.  The 4-2-5 allows for great leverage by the $ and WS to surround the run game and Force the ball back inside.  The other play that Flexbone teams like to run with the Slot Arc blocking is the Counter Option.  The $ / WS will see their Slot motion away and then return back and Arc block to their side.  The $ / WS needs to make sure he does not run too far to the MOF, or he will be out of position to defend the Pitch.

Slot Arcs - Play-Action Pass
The $ / WS will be man vs. the Slot if he should Arc and then run the Wheel route.

4.  Motion to You - Slot Vertical

Slot Vertical - Run - Block Inside or Load FS
If the Slot releases vertical, he can blocks a DE or LB inside, or he can Load Block the FS.  The $ / WS then becomes the outside 1/2 of QB to Pitch player.  The cut-ups show the $ / WS slow-playing the QB to give the FS time to get to the Pitch.  Your FS has to be a very good tackler who can run in order to adequately defend the Flexbone.

Some people have the $ / WS always stay outside and be the Pitch player, but having them read it this way allows you to better defend the QB run and causes him to have to pitch the ball to the third option, which is to the defense's advantage.

Slot Vertical - Play-Action Pass
Vs. motion, Cover Brown (Man-Free) becomes Robber (TCU Cover 2), and the FS will obey his Robber rules.  If #2 comes vertical, he has him.  If #2 is not vertical, he will rob Curl to Post of #1.  The $ is a Flat player if his Slot releases vertical with motion to him.

5.  Slot Folds

If the Slot Folds inside of the OT, the play will be Midline Lead.  The Flexbone offense is able to insert both Slot Backs on this play to create two additional run gaps that the defense must be able to account for.  The $ / WS and FS will account for those two additional gaps in the 4-2-5 defense.  Rutgers got gashed by this play a couple of times at first vs. Army in 2009 before they started fitting it up correctly.

Corner Play

It is important that the Corners understand that although they are Man vs. their WR, they will need to Crack Replace and help defend the run vs. a good Flexbone team.  The cut-ups show some good examples of how Corners are to Crack Replace and how to shed the block of their WR and make a tackle when the ball crosses the LOS on a run to them.

Here are the cut-ups:

As you know, I'm an amateur astronomer. Sometimes I get caught up in the science of it so much that I miss the important stuff. Did everyone see the conjunction of the Moon, Jupiter and Aldebaran last night? Mrs Blog and I took her mother home last evening after a family Christmas get together and I was out in the parking lot and looked up. Jupiter was dazzling point of fire near the Moon. What a beautiful sight ---- and on Christmas!

Jupiter will still be fairly close to the Moon this evening.

European champions, World Cup winners: Spain complete full year as the top team in FIFA's world rankings

World and European champions Spain have been rewarded for their ongoing success with the completion of a full year at the top of the FIFA rankings as Brazil plummet to 18th.

Spain's closest competitors are second-placed Germany. Italy, who Spain convincingly beat 4-0 in the summer's European Championship final, climb one place to fourth while England, despite their disappointing progress, remain sixth.

Heading a top 10 that has no new entrees, Spain's placing means they are to end a fifth consecutive year at first in the world rankings.

Dominant: Spain's summer European Championship triumph followed victory at both the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2008

FIFA RANKINGS

Rankings for December(November positions in parentheses)
1. Spain (1)
2. Germany (2)
3. Argentina (3)
4. Italy (5)
5. Colombia (8)
6. England (6)
7. Portugal (4)
8. Netherlands (7)
9. Russia (9)
10. Croatia (10)
11. Greece (12)
12. Switzerland (16)
13. Ecuador (17)
14. Ivory Coast (15)
15. Mexico (14)
16. Uruguay (11)
17. France (18)
18. Brazil (13)
19. Algeria (19)
20. Sweden (23)

Even if their presence at sixth appears underserved, England are the Home Nations' sole representative in the top 20. Scotland are 72nd, Wales are 82nd and Northern Ireland are joint 96th, while Republic of Ireland are joint 42nd.

The 2014 World Cup hosts Brazil have fallen as a result of playing only non-competitive fixtures and after their failure to win last month within a rankings system based upon a four-year results cycle.

They lost 2-1 to rivals Argentina, who remain third, and drew with Colombia, who have surprised many by reaching fifth.

It perhaps should not be overlooked, however, that their defeat to Argentina followed a 2-1 victory over them in September that levelled the aggregate score of their friendly double header at 3-3. When that match – in which only domestic league players were used – then went to penalties, Brazil won 4-3.

Colombia's ascent represents a significant improvement on 2011. At the same stage last year they were the world's 36th best team but six wins, a draw and only one defeat since have ensured their climb.

Ivory Coast are the highest ranked African side, 15th-placed Mexico are North America's highest side and Japan, at 22nd, are Asia's highest.

With 27 teams throughout the top 50 and 10 of the world's top 12 teams, European football remains the overall dominant power.

Mohamed bin Hammam resigns from all football-related positions, banned for life

LONDON – Mohamed bin Hammam resigned from all soccer-related posts and received a new lifetime ban from FIFA on Monday, perhaps closing one of the most damaging corruption scandals to hit the sport's world governing body.

Bin Hammam, a FIFA executive committee member from Qatar who challenged incumbent Sepp Blatter for the presidency last year, gave up his long-running dispute with the organization after being found guilty by FIFA of "repeated violations" of its code of ethics while head of the Asian Football Confederation.

FIFA said the 63-year-old bin Hammam sent a resignation letter to both FIFA and the AFC on Saturday.

"Mr. Mohamed bin Hammam ... has resigned from all his positions in football with immediate effect and will never be active in organized football again," a FIFA statement said.

Bin Hammam, who has always denied wrongdoing, had no immediate comment on FIFA's announcement.

Controversy has swirled around bin Hammam in recent years — he had also been fighting a separate life ban imposed by FIFA following allegations he offered bribes to voters when running against Blatter.

FIFA said the second life ban is a result of the final report from the chairman of its ethics committee, Michael J. Garcia.

"That report showed repeated violations of Article 19 (Conflict of Interest) of the FIFA Code of Ethics of Mohamed bin Hammam during his terms as AFC President and as member of the FIFA executive committee in the years 2008 to 2011, which justified a life-long ban from all football-related activity," the statement said.

According to the Malaysia-based AFC, a yearlong audit revealed "infringements" regarding the "execution of certain contracts" and tampering with the organization's bank accounts while president. As a result, Garcia and the AFC ordered probes into how bin Hammam managed the accounts.

The reputation of bin Hammam, who was elected AFC president in 2002, has been in tatters since a bribery scandal erupted in May 2011 — a week before the FIFA presidential election.

The Qatari withdrew his bid just hours before FIFA provisionally suspended him, allowing Blatter to be re-elected unopposed.

FIFA used evidence from whistleblowers that pointed to bin Hammam handing out $40,000 in cash bribes to officials in each of 24 Caribbean soccer nations during his campaign visit to Trinidad. He was banned for life in July 2011, but that was lifted a years later by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. He denied any wrongdoing, claiming the FIFA investigations were politically motivated to protect Blatter.

Jack Warner, FIFA vice president and a veteran power broker in the north and central American and Caribbean (CONCACAF) region, was also implicated in the scandal that cost bin Hammam his position. Warner walked away from world soccer before FIFA concluded its probe into allegations of wrongdoing.

English Football Association agrees on anti-racism action plan after high-profile cases

LONDON – The English Football Association has approved proposals to help stamp out the resurgence of racism in the sport.

The "Inclusion and Anti-Discrimination Action Plan" was requested by British Prime Minister David Cameron after high-profile racism cases involving Chelsea captain John Terry and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez last season and various fan incidents.

Among 15 pages of proposals, managers and players will have "mandatory induction arrangements" if they are new to the "British cultural environment."

Soccer leaders also want greater consistency in the response by police to racist abuse at matches and legislation to clamp down on abusive messages on social networking sites.

FA Chairman David Bernstein says "this is a commitment on behalf of English football to ensure the game is inclusive and free of discrimination."

Galliani: Milan create top players

The Rossoneri are looking to rebuild their team after the departure of several key players in the summer transfer window, and sporting director Ariedo Braida sees the 18-year-old as a valuable addition to their squad.

Paredes would fit Milan's new transfer policy of signing promising youngsters rather than accomplished stars, and the San Siro side are closely monitoring the attacking midfielder's progress, with an eye on a transfer at the end of the season.

Juve, meanwhile, feel the Argentine midfielder would be a good signing in the long term, as they aim to add some more creativity to their squad.

The Serie A champions have scouted Paredes on four different occasions this year, and the youngster has done enough to impress the Turin powerhouse.

Paredes, who has also been linked with Real Madrid, has an ongoing contract with Boca, but an offer in the region of €5 million could be enough to lure him away from his current club.

Pato linked with Brazil move

AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has confirmed receiving a bid from an unnamed club for striker Alexandre Pato, as Robinho edges towards a January return to Brazil.

Reports in Brazil and Italy have linked Pato with a possible move to recent Club World Cup winners Corinthians in the transfer window, with fellow Campeonato Brasileiro side Santos publicly declaring their willingness to bring Robinho back to his boyhood club.

Galliani is eager to retain the latter but admits persuading the forward to stay in Italy will be a tall order.

He told the Milan channel: "Milan have received an offer for Pato.

"Meanwhile, I am doing everything in my power to keep Robinho, I don't know if I will succeed, but I will use all my powers of persuasion.

"Robinho is happy here. He has a good relationship with the coach and the team, but he has a wife and children who are back on the beaches of Santos right now.

BEST OF 2012: TOP CLASS

Spain is FOX Soccer's team of the year. Find out why, and see who received an honorable mention.

"I hope to convince him to stay here. He hasn't asked vehemently to leave Milan, he's just asked to go back to his country."

The potential departure of a strike partnership that cost the Rossoneri a combined €30million could free up space for long-term target Mario Balotelli, but Galliani would not be drawn on the Manchester City striker on Wednesday.

"If both Robinho and Pato leave, we will only buy one striker because we believe the right number of strikers should be five," he added.

"Is (Didier) Drogba possible? No. (Javier) Pastore? No, because we've asked Paris Saint-Germain and they won't let him go."

Robinho, who originally left Santos to join Real Madrid in 2005, arrived in Milan following an unsettled two-year spell with Manchester City, but not before spending six months on loan back at Vila Belmiro in 2010.

Santos vice-president Odilio Rodrigues told UOL Esporte: "We are in negotiations. It will be difficult but we are are doing everything in our power to realise our fans' dream."

Madrid-United the gem of Champions League Round of 16

A dramatic Champions League Round of 16 draw was made Thursday morning in Nyon, Switzerland, giving football lovers exciting matchups to look forward to in February and March. Part of the drama of drawing the eight pairings now comes from not knowing exactly how the teams will be playing when the games come along in eight weeks' time: confidence, injuries and general form could all change the picture between now and then. Not to mention the longer-than-usual three weeks between first and second legs. Here is a breakdown ...
Real Madrid vs. Manchester United

This is the highlight of the round featuring, as it does, Cristiano Ronaldo returning to his former club for the first time; also Jose Mourinho up against United, the team against whom he made his name with Porto's Champions League win at this stage of the competition in 2004 (and with whom he has been linked as a possible successor to Sir Alex Ferguson); and the memory of what happened in 2003, when Madrid won a quarterfinal 6-5 on aggregate in a game that, arguably, changed the face of English football forever. Watching the second leg at Old Trafford, a 4-3 United win in which the Brazilian Ronaldo scored a hat trick, was Roman Abramovich, who was reportedly so seduced by the attacking football that he bought Chelsea. (He can't have liked it that much: the first coach he hired who really played an attacking game was Roberto di Matteo this season, and he only lasted three months.)

The difference is that each team has a different priority this season: for United, it has to be wresting the league out of the grasp of its "noisy neighbors" Manchester City. With City out of all European competition, after finishing at the bottom of Madrid's group, that won't be easy. Madrid, on the other hand, have as much as written off La Liga: it is currently 13 back on Barcelona, and president Florentino Perez reportedly told Mourinho that winning a Copa del Rey and Champions League double was his target for the season.

"We have set a clear goal: to win the Champions League," midfielder Sami Khedira told Bild this week. "We aren't doing Real Madrid justice this year. We cannot be happy with the season we are having. We haven't been able to get into the right rhythm since the very beginning."

The chance will come in February, and it will be fascinating to see Ronaldo up against his former teammates. They might be surprised by how much better he has become.

Pick: Real Madrid
AC Milan vs. Barcelona

What a week it's been at Barcelona: on Sunday night it came from behind to destroy its closest title rival, Atletico Madrid, a 4-1 win. Lionel Messi scored two more goals, taking his tally for 2012 to 90 and within days signed a new contract until 2018, in a deal making him the world's best player. Xavi Hernandez, Carles Puyol and Cristian Tello also extended their deals until 2016, and Eric Abidal rejoined training after his liver transplant nine months ago. Everything was hunky-dory.

Then the awful news, confirmed Wednesday night, that a tumor in coach Tito Vilanova's parotid (salivary) gland had returned, and he would need emergency surgery. That took place Thursday morning, with Jordi Roura, Vilanova's assistant, stepping in to take first-team affairs. Vilanova has done so well as Barcelona boss -- making the team different to Pep Guardiola's side, but even more effective (15 wins and one draw in La Liga has put it on target for another record-breaking season, already nine points ahead of second-place Atletico) -- that the question has been raised about Guardiola's effectiveness in his next job without him. The football world has united in wishing Vilanova a speedy recovery, and we hope he is on the bench in time for the Milan game next February.

Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has done well to keep his job this season, as at one stage, Milan looked unlikely to qualify from its group. A recent run of form, which started with a league win over Juventus, has pushed it up the Serie A table, and if it keeps confidence between now and February, it could prove a tricky opponent.

That said, the promotion of Roura, who grew up with Vilanova in Barcelona's La Masia, its youth academy, and was given his first-team debut by Johan Cruyff in 1988, is unlikely to affect Barcelona too much. If the assistant's assistant is half as good as the assistant has shown to be, then Barcelona's recent record -- it has reached the semi-final or better in each of the last five seasons -- will be safe.

Pick: Barcelona
Shakhtar Donetsk vs. Borussia Dortmund

This is the battle of the dark horses: Shakhtar was superb in its game against champion Chelsea and would have topped the group (and had an easier Round of 16 draw) had it not conceded a last-minute winner in a 3-2 loss at Stamford Bridge.

The tactical game between the coaches will be fascinating: For Shakhtar, Mircea Lucescu, who shrugged off his Romanian coach of the Year award this week with the brilliant phrase, "I've asked you several times to leave me and try to look at the younger generation of coaches;" and for Dortmund, Jurgen Klopp, who has laughed off talk of a future at Chelsea or Liverpool and claimed that his team, in the next four years, could achieve some truly special things.

The problem for Shakhtar is that, as always, this game comes in the midst of its winter break. It does not have a league game in December through February, so will have to hit the ground running against Dortmund. No easy task. Two of the breakout stars of this campaign -- Henryk Mkhitaryan (Shakhtar) and Marco Reus (Dortmund) -- go head-to-head in what could be the most exciting tie of the round.

Pick: Borussia Dortmund
Arsenal vs. Bayern Munich

The good news for Arsenal: At least it wasn't Barcelona, a team it has drawn twice in the last three years in the competition. The bad news? Bayern is probably the next best side.

Arsenal paid the price for failing to top Group B (which it would have done by beating Olympiakos on Matchday Six) but Bayern, runner-up last May, has a stronger squad this season and goes into Germany's winter break nine points clear at the top of the Bundesliga. A knee injury to center back Holger Badstuber could yet cost Bayern, but there's no doubt it is better than last year, and Arsenal is weaker.

The tie also sees a Munich reunion for Arsenal winger Lukas Podolski, who has at times looked worthy of his status as Arsenal's best-paid player, and at other times, barely merited a place on the bench. He has played well in Europe, though.

Pick: Bayern Munich
Valencia vs. Paris Saint-Germain

Someone has been looking after Carlo Ancelotti in recent weeks. His job was under threat before PSG beat Porto to top a very comfortable Group A, and now the Italian's side faces Valencia, a team that is struggling domestically and which earlier this month fired coach Mauricio Pellegrino.

"If there's any team we want to avoid, it's Madrid," PSG midfielder Blaise Matuidi said.

Valencia has a crop of French players -- among them Adil Rami, Aly Cissokho and Jeremy Mathieu -- and an excellent record against French teams.

"It will be special for me as I have good memories of Valencia," PSG sports director Leonardo, who played for the Spanish club, told beIN Sport. "Playing Madrid would have been fantastic, but I'd rather play them later in the competition: and lots of clubs wouldn't have wanted to play PSG, which is a sign of the progress we are making already." With Lucas Moura soon to join the PSG squad in January, the French side, reported on Thursday to be receiving €150 million in "funding" from the Qatar Tourism Authority, has to be favored.

Pick: PSG
Galatasaray vs. Schalke

Schalke is the team from Pot 1 (of group winners) that everyone would have wanted to face. Since beating Arsenal at the Emirates on Matchday Five, when it was five points ahead of German champion Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga, it has hit a major slump, culminating in coach Huub Stevens losing his job last week. The German press has reported that Di Matteo is a target, as is Mainz 05 boss Thomas Tuchel, but any new man would come in at the end of this season, so youth team coach Jens Keller is holding the fort for now. Lewis Holtby and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, whose contracts expire at the end of the season, might still be around for this tie, which would give Schalke a huge advantage. Reports in Germany suggested that Stevens' ousting was connected to their contract talks.

For Galatasaray, this is the reward for seeing off Cluj and Braga to finish second in Group H, and the chance for Burak Yilmaz, with six goals in six Euorpean games this season, to continue his remarkable form.

Pick: Schalke
Celtic vs. Juventus

Celtic coach Neil Lennon tweeted after the draw: "Absolute beauty of a tie...very tough but they all potentially were."

Celtic has a decent record against Juventus, winning 1-0 at this stage of the 1982 European Cup (it lost the second leg 0-2), and winning 4-3 at home in the 2001 competition group stage (it lost the away leg 2-3).

But the joy will be greater for Juventus counterpart Antonio Conte, who will see this tie as eminently winnable, even though it comes amid a tough Serie A schedule, against Fiorentina, Roma and Napoli. Juventus topped Chelsea and Shakhtar in its group and is now looking a dangerous contender.

Pick: Juventus
Malaga vs. Porto

With so many big teams facing off against each other, this season's competition could open up for an outsider and the winner of this tie might just be it.

Malaga, a debutant in the Champions League, surprised many by romping to the top spot in Group C and was, along with Porto, the first side to reach the last 16. Coach Manuel Pellegrini was in charge of Villarreal when it reached the 2006 semi-final. Porto has much more of a European pedigree even if this side is very different from Andre Villas-Boas' Europa League winners of 2010. Porto may face January bids for Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez but is expected to hold onto both players, for now at least.

Pick: Porto
