World Cup odds

Brazil a 3-to-1 favorite to raise trophy at home

It took LVH Super Book assistant manager Jeff Sherman only two days after the completion of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa to post odds on the 2014 event in Brazil. Sherman posted numbers on 90 national teams to win, and after two years of betting action with two more to go, he’s down to 82 teams, with 50 more still to be eliminated through qualifying matches.
Brazil is the 3-to-1 favorite, followed by Spain (5-to-1), Argentina (5-to-1) and Germany (8-to-1). Sherman says there’s a huge drop off from the top four teams to the rest of the field.
Brazil gets the edge simply because of playing at home, according to Sherman. Brazil last hosted the World Cup in 1950, losing to Uruguay in the final match, but has been dominant in many of the tournaments played outside of Europe and Africa.
Three of Brazil’s five World Cup titles have been won in the Americas -- 1994 (USA), 1970 (Mexico) and 1962 (Chile). They also win it all in 2002 in Korea/Japan and in 1958 in Sweden.
Spain became the first European team to win the World Cup away from Europe when La Roja won in South Africa in 2010.
Beyond the comfort of playing at home in front of their own fans and going about their daily routine in familiar surroundings, the Brazilians will also have the big advantage in officiating. There’s nothing in FIFA's official handbook that states every close call goes to the home team, but it’s been clear in recent events that the officials are greatly influenced by the home crowd.
The drop off after the big four goes to the Netherlands and Italy at 15-to-1. The under-performing England squad is 20-to-1, Uruguay and France are 25-to-1, with Mexico and Portugal are 30-to-1.
Sherman sees Mexico as a team that could surprise and provide some value.
“I expect Mexico to perform well in 2014," he said. "They already have an outstanding team and they’ll be adding a few of the players that just won the 17-and-under World Cup.”
The Stars and Stripes of the United States, managed by Jurgen Klinsmann -- a key member of the West Germany squad that won the Cup in 1990 -- are listed at 60-to-1.
The biggest moves over the past two years of action have seen Belgium drop from 250-to-1 down to 25-to-1 and Columbia from 100-to-1 down to 30-to-1.
Nevada sports books won’t come close to handling the type of action that England sees on the World Cup, but bettors are warming up to soccer more than ever before. Handle continues to rise as American bettors get more acclimated with the game, a game some say is too slow for their liking.
It also helps that networks such as Fox and ESPN are doing a great job of promoting the games and showing them all live. If there's a live event on television, no matter what the sport, American bettors want action on it.
