"He is a great kid, he is young (17) and he can develop even further," Marble said. "He has a big body, he has great athleticism, speed, movement and loose hips for a kid his size. He has great work ethic so he is a kid with a great future. He had a lot of options and I am really excited that he chose UConn. It was because of the coaching staff and George DeLeone in particular that drew him to UConn. We are excited for him. He is a great kid. He works hard in the classroom, is a leader, has great work ethic and really is just beginning to realize his potential."
Rutherford is a native of Stouffenville, Ontario who came to Kent via Villanova College in King City, Ontario. UConn had a pretty good track record with Canadian prospects during Randy Edsall's tenure with the Huskies so perhaps he can follow in the footsteps of players like current players Jesse Joseph, a defensive end, and Alex Mateas, a center, and former players like tight end John Delahunt (currently playing with the CFL's Hamilton Tiger-Cats) and center Moe Petrus.
For those interested in seeing him in action, here's a link to his HUDL profile which features highlights from eight games during the 2012 season at Kent.
